Diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes
Diabetes mellitus is defined by hyperglycemia (increased concentration of glucose in the blood) elevated plasma glucose levels caused by defective insulin secretion (absolute in type 1 and relative in type 2), resistance to insulin action (type 2), or a combination of both. Uncontrolled Diabetes mellitus leads to an increased risk of microvascular damage (retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy), reduced life expectancy, increased risk of macrovascular complications (ischemic heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease), and diminished quality of life.
